Use this article to understand why GLP-1 and GIP weight-loss treatments cannot be prescribed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, the required contraception and pregnancy-planning guidelines, and what steps to take if you become pregnant while on treatment.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding restrictions
MedExpress cannot issue a prescription for injectable weight-loss treatments (such as Wegovy® or Mounjaro®) if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Pregnancy contraindication: Weight-loss medications are contraindicated during pregnancy because safety for the developing fetus has not been established in clinical trials.
Breastfeeding contraindication: It is unknown whether active ingredients (semaglutide or tirzepatide) pass into human breast milk. Therefore, treatment is not permitted while breastfeeding.
Contraception and family planning guidelines
Women of childbearing age must use effective contraception while taking weight-loss treatments:
Effective contraception required: Reliable birth control should be maintained throughout treatment to prevent unintended pregnancy.
Oral birth control interaction with Mounjaro®: Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) causes delayed gastric emptying, which can temporarily reduce the absorption and effectiveness of oral contraceptive pills. Patients using oral contraceptives should use a non-oral contraceptive method or add a barrier method (such as condoms) for 4 weeks after starting treatment and for 4 weeks after each dose escalation.
Pre-conception washout periods: If you are planning a pregnancy, you must discontinue treatment in advance to allow the active ingredient to clear safely from your body before conception:
Wegovy® (semaglutide): Discontinue at least 2 months before attempting to conceive.
Mounjaro® (tirzepatide): Discontinue at least 1 month before attempting to conceive.
What to do if you become pregnant during treatment
If you discover that you are pregnant while using weight-loss medication:
Stop treatment immediately: Discontinue administering your weekly injections as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Do not take any further doses.
Contact your doctor: Inform MedExpress and your primary care physician immediately to update your medical record and ensure safe clinical support during your pregnancy.
