Weight-loss treatments such as Mounjaro® and Wegovy® are not suitable for everyone. Eligibility depends on your Body Mass Index (BMI), relevant weight-related health conditions, and an individual clinical assessment.

The standard BMI requirements for treatment
Which weight-related health conditions may affect eligibility
Why a clinical assessment is required
What are the standard BMI requirements?
You may be eligible for treatment with Mounjaro® or Wegovy® if you are an adult and meet one of the following criteria:
BMI of 30 or higher
A BMI of 30 or higher is the standard eligibility threshold for adults living with obesity.
BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition
You may be eligible if your BMI is between 27 and 30 and you also have at least one weight-related health condition, such as:
Prediabetes
High blood pressure
Sleep apnoea
High cholesterol
Heart or cardiovascular disease
This list is not exhaustive. Your medical history and individual circumstances will be reviewed during your consultation.
What if my BMI is below the standard threshold?
If you have already received weight-loss treatment from another provider and your BMI is now below the standard threshold, your eligibility will be assessed individually.
You may be asked to provide evidence of your previous treatment and progress. A qualified prescriber will decide whether continuing treatment is safe and clinically appropriate.
Does meeting the BMI criteria guarantee treatment?
No. Meeting the BMI criteria does not guarantee that treatment will be prescribed.
A qualified prescriber must review your consultation and consider:
Your current health
Your medical history
Existing health conditions
Other medicines or treatments you use
Whether the requested treatment is safe and appropriate for you
A prescription will only be issued if the prescriber determines that treatment is clinically suitable.
What happens if treatment is not suitable?
If the prescriber determines that Mounjaro® or Wegovy® is not safe or appropriate for you, a prescription will not be issued.
This decision is based on clinical safety requirements and is intended to protect your health.
Key takeaway

A BMI of 30 or higher; or
