Wegovy vs Mounjaro: differences, effectiveness and choosing a treatment

Overview

Use this article to understand the key differences between Wegovy® and Mounjaro®, including active ingredients, mechanisms of action, clinical evidence on effectiveness, and how treatment suitability is determined by an EU-registered doctor.

Active ingredients and mechanisms of action

Wegovy® and Mounjaro® are both prescription weight management medications administered via once-weekly subcutaneous self-injection, but they contain different active ingredients and target different hormone pathways:

  • Wegovy® (semaglutide): Contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which acts as a single GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonist. It mimics the natural GLP-1 hormone to regulate appetite, increase satiety, and slow gastric emptying.

  • Mounjaro® (tirzepatide): Contains the active ingredient tirzepatide, which acts as a dual GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics both intestinal hormones to regulate appetite, enhance feelings of fullness, and support blood sugar control.

  • Administration Frequency: Both medications are administered once weekly on the same day each week using a pre-filled injection pen.

Clinical trial evidence and treatment effectiveness

Both Wegovy® and Mounjaro® have been demonstrated to be effective treatments for weight management in clinical studies when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Individual weight loss results vary depending on patient adherence, lifestyle factors, and personal response to the medication.

  • Wegovy® (semaglutide) evidence: Clinical trial data demonstrate that approximately 70% of participants taking semaglutide achieved a weight loss of at least 10% of their body weight over 68 weeks, with approximately 50% losing 15% or more. In broad clinical populations, average weight loss with Wegovy® at maintenance doses is approximately 15%.

  • Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) evidence: Clinical trial data indicate that users reaching the highest dosage of tirzepatide achieved an average weight loss of up to 20% of their body weight over trial periods.

  • Individual variation: Clinical outcomes vary significantly between individuals. Achieving targeted weight loss depends on consistent medication adherence, caloric restriction, and regular exercise.

Determining clinical suitability and choosing a treatment

Selecting between Wegovy® and Mounjaro® is a medical decision that requires clinical evaluation:

  • Individual medical assessment: An EU-registered doctor evaluates your health questionnaire, Body Mass Index (BMI), medical history, current health conditions, and previous treatment experiences before determining if Wegovy® or Mounjaro® is suitable for you.

  • Non-promotional clinical approach: Neither treatment is universally superior for every patient. Factors such as side effect tolerance, target dosage progression, and medical history guide the prescribing doctor's clinical recommendation.
