How should I store my Wegovy pens?

To ensure Wegovy remains safe and effective, it is important to store your pens correctly. Storage requirements differ depending on whether the pen is unopened or already in use.

Use this guide to:

  • Learn the correct temperature settings for storage.

  • Understand how long a pen can be used after the first dose.

  • Know what to do if your medication is exposed to extreme temperatures.

Storing unopened Wegovy pens

Unused pens should be kept in the refrigerator to maintain their stability until the expiry date.

  • Temperature: Store in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C.

  • Placement: Avoid storing pens in the fridge door, as the temperature fluctuates frequently when the door is opened.

  • Packaging: Keep Wegovy in its original, unopened packaging to protect the medication from light and clearly see the expiry date.

  • Freezing: Do not freeze Wegovy. If a pen has been frozen, it must be discarded immediately.

  • Room temperature storage: The option to store a pen for up to 6 weeks (42 days) below 30°C applies only once the pen is in use. Before first use, the pen should be stored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C.

Storing a Wegovy pen currently in use

Once you have administered your first dose from a pen, you have more flexibility, but the 6-week period begins from this point.

  • Duration: A pen that is already in use can be stored for up to 6 weeks (42 days).

  • Location: You can keep it in the fridge or at room temperature below 30°C.

  • Safety: Store the pen away from direct heat and out of the sight and reach of children.

  • Protection: Always replace the pen cap after each use to protect the medication from light.

Common storage scenarios: What to do

If you are unsure whether your Wegovy pen can still be used, follow the guidance below:

  • Left out of the fridge overnight: If the pen is already in use and the room temperature stayed below 30°C, the pen can be used for up to 6 weeks after the first use.

  • Pen has frozen: Do not use it. Freezing damages the medication. It must be disposed of safely in your sharps bin.

  • Room temperature exceeded 30°C: If the medication has been exposed to temperatures above 30°C, for example during a heatwave or in a hot car, it must be discarded, even if the solution looks clear.

  • Past the expiry date: Do not use any pen that has passed its expiry date, regardless of how it was stored.
