Overview
Use this article to understand how to prepare, prime, and administer your weekly Mounjaro® KwikPen injection, select approved injection sites, safely handle needles, and learn why residual liquid remains in the pen after completing four doses.
Mounjaro® KwikPen preparation and administration
The Mounjaro® KwikPen is a multi-dose pre-filled injection pen designed for once-weekly subcutaneous application.
Injection Sites: Injections can be administered into the fat tissue of the abdomen (stomach area, at least 5 cm from the belly button), the front of the upper thigh, or the outer upper arm (if administered by another person). Rotate your injection site each week to prevent skin irritation or lumps.
Timing: Administer your injection once per week on the same day each week at any time of day, with or without food.
Needle Attachment: Attach a new, sterile needle prior to every weekly injection. Each Mounjaro® package includes four single-use needles (one for each weekly dose).
Priming the Pen: Before injecting your dose, prime the pen according to the enclosed patient information leaflet to remove air bubbles and ensure the needle is filled with medication.
Injecting the Dose: Once primed, insert the needle into the skin at your chosen site and push the dose knob completely down until it stops. Hold the button down for a slow count of 5 to ensure the full dose (0.6 ml) is delivered before removing the needle from the skin.
Why liquid remains in the Mounjaro® KwikPen after 4 doses
It is completely normal and expected to see residual liquid in the Mounjaro® KwikPen after completing your four weekly doses.
Pen Volume and Design: Each Mounjaro® KwikPen is filled with 3 ml of solution. Over four weeks, four prescribed doses of 0.6 ml each are delivered, totaling 2.4 ml of medication.
Purpose of Extra Liquid: The remaining volume (approximately 0.6 ml) is factory-included to allow for pen priming before each injection and to ensure that full, accurate doses are dispensed every time. Seeing liquid left over after four doses confirms that the pen functioned correctly.
Do Not Extract Extra Medicine: The KwikPen safety mechanism automatically locks after four doses. Do not attempt to extract, force out, or inject leftover liquid using external syringes or by tampering with the pen. Leftover liquid does not constitute an additional or safe dose.
Needle safety and pen disposal
Follow proper safety procedures after completing each injection:
Immediate Needle Removal: Immediately after administering your dose, unscrew and remove the needle from the pen using the outer needle cap. Never store the KwikPen with a needle attached, as this can lead to contamination or leakage.
Sharps Disposal: Dispose of used needles immediately into a dedicated, puncture-proof sharps disposal container.
Pen Disposal: Once all four doses are completed or 30 days have passed since first use, dispose of the entire KwikPen in accordance with local guidance.
